I have wondered for a long time why 3.42 was what most came with seems that is a bit high if you hook anything behind it.

The 3.42 is a horrible ratio for a 2500. It puts way too much stress on the OD clutches. Good for fuel economy but bad for everything else. I'm glad Ram does 3.73 stock now
2021 3500 Mega HO DRW
I have 3.73 in my 03 and when loaded i would not want any higher gears but i do have the 6 speed manual, i love the granny gear.
Ah gotcha, yeah the NV5600 has a taller OD gear than the 68RFE so that coupled with a 3.73 is a tall setup. It's right on the money for the automatics though.
I have 342's in my 03. It is a bit testy with 12K and 285's on hills. But the RPMs are much lower at highway. Without the MM3, I was getting 22 MPG.
