Tapping sound coming from the front of my engine.

Bought the truck recently and am not a diesel specialist, but am well versed in gas motors. Quick learner and excited to experience the diesel world.

Here is what I am challenged with. In the front of the motor, behind the grill it sounds like a tapping sounds. More like a hammer hitting metal. I've done some research and they say it could be coming from my CP pump. There is a video out there and it does sounds like that but I am unsure where to start. Who knows, it may be worse than this. It has mass amounts of power and seems to run great!

I live around the Dallas area and am looking for a shop/ technician, not a parts chaser/replacer, who is well versed in the Cummins world. I did take it to the Dodge garage for factory recalls and he had the technician look at it quickly. He thought it was coming from the front of the motor as well, possible from the front cam area. I am not opposed to driving to have an "expert" help me understand what I am dealing with.

Thanks in advance and hopefully it will be a less expensive fix versus buckets of money.

My hearing must be bad (too many years next to a siren) or something but I can’t hear that pinging sound. Sounds like a Cummins to me, LOL.

Maybe someone with great ears can hear what your describing.

Really like the looks of your truck watersupply189.

I hear ya, no pun intended, with my hearing not being as acute as it once was.

I'm sure there is enough knowledge on here for some good ole fashion guidance and help.

Make it a great day and have a fantastic Memorial Day weekend!

I don’t think there is anything wrong. I have a 06 cummins and it sounds just like your truck.

Re: Tapping sound coming from the front of my engine.

This isn't my truck, but an illustration of what the engine issue sounds like. Trying to share what mine is doing. Painting the best picture possible. It's not normal for this to occur. A tech put his stethoscope on it and said that he would take it back to where I bought it. Too late for that! That isn't a solution. I also never had the chance to speak with the tech and not sure what he meant by that. If he would've said, you have a bent rod, now I comprehend the scope of repairs. When he says' you'll need to leave it for diagnosis, I understand that as well. I just want to make sure I have the most competent individual on the case. That's why I am asking for recommendations around the Dallas Metro area, who one can trust with these expensive pieces of equipment.
