    White Smoke

    Howdy folks. It seems we get a lot of questions about white smoke from a deleted truck. I've decided it was best to post a short thread about it so the newbie can understand.

    First of all, white smoke in most cases doesn't mean something is wrong. White smoke is just unburned or poorly combusted diesel fuel.

    Old school diesel guys know white smoke is quite common when the engine is cold. The same thing applies to modern diesel engines without a DPF installed. If your engine is cold and not entirely up to operating temp, the cylinder is not hot enough to ignite the fuel properly, and you get the white smoke and sometimes misfire. Running a more significant tune than stock, low boost fueling, bigger injectors, 12V tunes, etc...can all make the engine more susceptible to white smoke and misfire. Even specific fuel blends can cause the engine to white smoke as well.

    In most cases, white smoke will turn more all black once the engine is entirely up to operating temp.

    Bottom line, white smoke is generally no cause for alarm. If your truck misfires and white smokes after the engine is fully warmed up and you are driving normally, then there are some things to investigate at that point.
