Gale Banks is doing it again.... Differential Covers this time.

Anyone following the YouTube video series Gale Banks is doing on testing differential covers.... Very interesting stuff. I never even thought about it until now. I have a feeling ol Gale will be coming out with a highly engineered cover soon.

I already made my position on this.

He's going to make a better mousetrap. Everything he has is Me too and his version of someone elses. He just waits to see what sells.

Lots of videos impress people. They sell stuff. They also hide allot of inefficiencies in ones products. He who speaks the loudest is guilty the most.

For you youngins, Be very careful. Too many years of wisdom and experience. I see through this crap.

Coming from a hydraulic engineering background myself, I see where Gale is going with this and I find myself agreeing with him. I’m not saying the flatback covers are junk but he is on to something with this study.

I agree with his point and yours. I don't trust him. Since this is a static situation, I can't quite grasp the difference between flat and rounded. The secret ,as he pointed out, is keeping the oil level up to a sufficient point. One thing that struck me was his oil level marks seemed to be a tad low compared to a fill point on a real diff. You and I know the oil will move faster when it's warmed up. so it will sling and cool more. The seals used are not pressure seals, they're retention seals. So over filling could be a issue with leakage. Since heat kills, the idea of the cast aluminum is to help dissipate the heat. Hint. The longer the oil is on the cover surface, the more heat it will absorb. I know you agree with me so far.

My opinion is this is a set up. I think you said he's coming out with a new product. He's going to try to make it better. In my estimation, he should concentrate on getting rid of the heat. They all do a decent job at reducing heat. However, as I have proved already, reduce the friction in the first place. Since that is virtually impossible, then get rid of the heat. How am I doing so far? LOL As long as all your contact surfaces are sufficiently lubed and cooled, all of this is moot.

I have a BD cover on my rear. The only reason I have it is because the stamping was starting to rot out on the seal surface. I used a BD. I notice Banks never uses BD products for his comparisons. My heat proof was seat of the pants engineering. Way back when I was messing around with the Archoil friction modifier for these guys in the forum. . . . . I did a test. It was a good time because I was had just changed my gears to 342's. I drove the truck on a hot summer day down the interstate. Came home and felt the cover plate. It was hot. You could touch it but not for long. I added the Arch oil and drove it again. The rear was hot, but I could keep my hand on it. I cut maybe 10 to 15* out. The cover added later, who knows. I guess if it was worth it, I could make a air diverter and blow the air over the cover.

People would buy dog manure if it was marketed fight.

Good Job. I needed the mental exercise.

Yes though I was planning on using one of their intakes. Not because of his outrageous claims. But because I felt it would work best for my goals

    Never got it though

How's that Shibby working out for ya? Everytime you look at it, Remember the old fart had his fingers in the design. I been doing this for at least a week and a half! LOL That's an old AAmco Transmission commercial

All this talk bashing Banks..... I don’t get it. Where is any proof he’s a a fake and selling snake oil? He’s been in the high performance supercharging/turbocharging industry since the 50’s and has a huge contract with the US military using his design to power their new support vehicle. He’s like the Boeing of the vehicle world. I don’t see where he’s a crook or selling something that it’s not.

Re: Gale Banks is doing it again.... Differential Covers this time.

Gear oil is made at a specific weight and chemicals blended in are design to run at high temps and heavy loads. Todays lube are way better than even a decade ago.
So I would like to know if a rear end oil temp is 335 degrees while pulling a load at 60 mph going up a mountain road ... is the oil temp actually high or low compared to the engineers design of the system ?

The trucks rear end is designed to throw the oil within the housing, over the gears while a portion of the same gear is always submerged in oil, and with this oil movement, gravitate outward to the outer seals and bearings for their lube.
If the oil level is to specs ... as the designing engineers intended ... at the proper level for the application .. is changed as required .. is there a real issue here ?

(I will admit, I have an aftermarket cover for the front and rear axles. There was only two reasons for my changes.
    1. I wanted a larger reservoir
    2. I wanted a lower drain plug to make changing the gear oil easier.)
