    DEF Filter

So for those of you who don't know, I work for a Street Sweeper dealer and sell sweepers to the towns. I am a mechanic and parts manager. I was talking to some of the guys at a town we just sold a machine to. They had issues with their fleet of Fords, and Chevys with the DEF. They said that if the truck sat the DEF would crystallize in the DEF filter. Their solution is not to let the DEF go below 3/4 tank. They also keep on hand DEF Filters for all their vehicles. Has anybody ever changed their DEF filter on their cummins? I have checked, they do have one. I may change mine soon, just to do a write up and inspect its condition.

This would be a fantastic write up my friend! Too bad these trucks don't have what the construction equipment has such as john deere and possibly cat. Every time the engine shuts off it drains the lines of the fuel and def. Im surprised the sweeper doesn't have something like that either.

I love how these engineers have figured out how to stop “global warming” but can’t stop that DEF fluid from crystalizing in the injector, lines and filters. My new Cat D5K2 dozer supposedly purges the lines of def fluid at shutdown like you were saying. There are more electronics on these new diesels than I’ve ever seen over the years.

our sweepers may purge the DEF, but I am not sure, and the tech guys I can ask won't be here for a few months. They are horrible with email.

Ok, I'm old & don't mess with DEF .. so bear with me, please.

If the DEF will crystallize in the line, wouldn't that mean there is some form of air leak / air pocket somewhere allowing this ?
Seems if the liquid is in a sealed system .. it shouldn't without air.

Or am I way off target again ?

You know how DPW guys are, beat the truck, we don't own it. also seeing it more in fords and chevys, but just thinking about it in our Ram's. I am still going to find a DEF filter and see what it looks like.
