I would definitely recommend putting a plastic bag over the alternator for sure.

May help to remove the air filter top also.

The first time you change it will be interesting, please let us know.

Re: Who All Is Running A Coolant Filter?

Came across this thread, want to buy a coolant filter in the near future.

My big question is there a difference in the sinister diesel that has a round puck design vs the flat plate looking one.

    I am at a loss.

Pics of the two different versions.

One that @BrentM has vs the puck design stole his pic and a random pic I found off image search for the plate style.

Also, the Donaldson DBC4785 seems to be the cross version for the Cat 435-5142.

I run one but just an in-line filter.

It’s inexpensive, easy to install, and comes apart to be cleaned.

I think they are just design changes that they had for the threaded filter block.

Looks like they just changed the design to the round head for the better.

Now the coolant lines are a little shorter and don’t cross over.

May even sit a little higher and make it easier to accommodate and remove the filter, hard to tell from just looking at the picture.

I would suggest e-mailing them for a better explanation.

    Please keep us posted.

Sent an email to Sinister and I'll copy and paste the answer I am given.

I prefer the look of the flat plate personally.

Talked to Sinister the answer was nothing.

They didn't like that other companies copied the plate looking style and went in-house with a puck style.

Exactly the same flow and filtration between the two, the placement of the hoses was just a byproduct of the style change.

Bottom pic install is definitely bucket list worthy - Especially if some deletion weight loss took place up top - install would be much less of a hassle & water pump life might be greatly extended.

Jeff thank you for those install pics.

Looking at the Sinister web site they only offer the round top filter head for the 2013-2018 RAM now.

I agree either one might extend the water pump life.

My biggest concern or negative with either design is the engine mounted filter bracket and the danger of coolant leaks or spills on top of the alternator.

Re: Who All Is Running A Coolant Filter?

We carry some different versions of these that have the traditional look vs. the puck and are black instead of the “sinister blue.”

They dress up the engine bay IMO.

Yup! You are very much correct Bob!

Engine mounted filter brackets really throw up a Red Flag and definitely a major concern!

Didn't even think about the alternator being directly below it.
