Hey all. I've recently totaled my low mileage (70k) 2003 5.9 2500 and need to pick up something new. I don't tow very much weight just around 7k max a few times a year to hatfield n Mccoy in West Virginia. I like having the extra power of the diesel when going over the west virginia mountains. 3rd gen 5.9 trucks under 100k miles go for a premium where i live. Your looking at 27k for a 2003-2005 and if its a 2006-2007 over 30k. My 03 just had a 4 inch afe turboback exhaust, afe stage 2 intake, and a smarty so6. It ran great, towed great, and got great fuel mileage. Most used 2010-12s with semi low mileage are around 35k. For not much more i can get a brand new 17. My question is, Can i get a 17, Remove the egr/DPF and get a tune from a reputable shop and it run just as good as the 5.9 or at least very similar. I'm not looking for driveability issues such as surging etc. It will be a daily driver so nothing crazy just deleted/tuned with trans tuning and maybe 30-60 more horsepower. I test drove a 2016 and the transmission didn't shift as nice as i liked and i read horror stories about all the emissions crap and people get crappy mpg towing. So while in my research of where to go for tunes/deletes it brought me here. I hope to have a new cummins soon and look forward to spending a lot of time on here asking a ton of noob questions haha.
Heres a picture of the old 5.9. I will miss her!
