My thoughts are there's more to it than just lower HP.
Weight, electronics, equipment like trans and such verses what is sold today.
This might include way more than mentioned so far.

Lower HP just takes away from the trucks performance.
From a tuning perspective, you just try to make the engine more efficient and if its an auto, try to put the power to ground more efficiently with some shift and lockup changes.
It takes X amount of power to move the weight down the road. The key is to get the engine to make X amount of power with as little fuel possible and minimize the power loss through the drive train.

Well said ray! I remember guys getting almost 28 mpg on the highway during a previous update, but it was modified because of some engine noise some werent satisfied with. Point being the mpgs can be done and the power be at hand also just depending on how you utilize that throttle.
Yea, the hardest factor to configure is the human factor. Or should I say the human mind and present attitude at the time of driving. That can really change mpg's

Hold on a minute!!! I asked first!!! Going to be ordering some parts soon to help fund the new test truck.
Aren't the new transmissions wonderful. We used to have to drop the pan and put new valve bodies in to hop up the shifting and line pressure. Now you just need to be able to program a computer!!
I wouldn't mind running a emission intact tune if it wasn't for the heavy EGR on the 12 and earlier trucks. I always wondered if the truck could be custom tuned with no EGR. I ran a stock 2010 with the EGR unplugged for over 150,000 miles with the CEL on. Truck ran beautifully, and actually got very decent hand calculated MPG on the highway. The best I got was 20.8 on a tank, and that wasn't taking it easy. The DPF finally started to fail around 200,000 miles. The only way I could tell was the MPG started to tank and it seemed to always smell of Regen. Then I swapped it over to the stock power level on a raceme jr. Should have done it a lot sooner due to oil dilution, but the truck is currently 310,000 and super strong.
I think will be able do a lot of neat things and keep zero smoke coming out the tail pipe with Warp. That is why I'm looking forward to testing some things out.
