CA Emissions - Hardware or Software?

I’m in Texas and I bought my truck here in Texas but it has California-compliant emissions. What makes it California-compliant? Is it a hardware component that non-California-compliant trucks don’t have or is it a software issue? My friends (Texas) Rams sound like beefy Cummins diesel trucks, mine sounds like a gerbil-powered Honda Accord! Thanks.

Add'l info: Truck is stock. I'll be installing MM3 (Lite) from DRD tonight. If all goes well, full EGR delete tomorrow.

California HAS to set the highest standards or they're not happy. Last time I heard, everything the EPA demanded on trucks built in that year is on it from the factory as the standard build.

Some states, like where I live, Tennessee, require what the factory puts out to be on there if you live in certain counties. Smog stuff. In other counties like mine, all that smog stuff can come off.

If you are in a smog county in your state, verify the standards they require. Then remove all they don't require. Going the MM3 will improve the health / longevity of the truck.

We're not in a smog county. I'm doing full EGR delete today. Turbo back exhaust delete in the near future. I'm just concerned that there's some *additional* component that these 50-state trucks have that I'm missing. Thanks for your response. God bless!

Re: CA Emissions - Hardware or Software?

I installed my MM3 Lite from DRD yesterday and after flashing the ECM the engine immediately started sounding growly like a Cummins should. I can only conclude that "CA emissions" is a software issue. Not completely sure though. I've found no hardware components that are unique to 50-state trucks but this is my first Ram so...

I deleted the EGR but none of the exhaust components. That's next. I honestly expected more experts to chime in on this issue. Surely someone has an idea what's going on here?

BTW, God bless Ray @ DRD. I had some tuner configuration issues (on account of I'm a bonehead) and Ray answered my tech support question at 10 freakin' PM. Now *that's* service!!!
