    Towing in 4wd.

Any downside to towing in 4hi? I know not to go faster than 55mph, but other than that, any precautions i should take?

None I can think of beyond stuff you would normally do like watch you engine and transmission temps. If you need to be in 4x to get the traction you need then everything should be fine.

I wad thinking the same thing. I ask because I will be pulling my RV up to Alaska and I have read that some roads can get bad. Also, as i was working under the truck, I just noticed how much smaller the front drive shaft is compared to the main drive shaft. Is the tq split 50/50 from front to rear or is it reduced accordingly?

You know... I've never really thought about that. I'd guess it's evenly split 50/50, the main drive shaft still needs to be twice as strong as the front for all the times you run in 2wd.

An old driveline man explained it to me this way. The rear shaft has thinner tubing than the front, but since it's longer it needs to be larger around to retain strength (twisting, bending). If it was made of the same materials as the front shaft it would weigh significantly more. Also the front usually has clearance issues, hence the smaller diameter tube. Hope this helps.

I've done it on the sand at Glamis and on the beach at Pismo, it's actually pretty fun!
