Re: Oil change time frame and mileage

I used to do 5k intervals with Rotella T6. (2013 deleted and tuned by Ray)
Thanks to @AnOldBiker who turned me on to Blackstone! I sent a sample of 5k oil, got my report back and a suggestion to try 9k next time. That sample suggested I try 11k. Spending $40 to extend an at least $100 service makes sense to me and no more guessing games! If I was not deleted, is consider it even more important! I also consider it a wise investment for resale should that ever happen.

2013 Laramie 2500 CC. Warp tuning on RaceMe. 2 inch level w/35s.

Re: Oil change time frame and mileage

I guess I'm too old school. I can tell by looking and feeling the oil in my fingers. I just change the oil once a year, filters twice and use magnets on the pan and filters. Right now, I can go for 15K before it turns black. All I use is Rotella T6 and the Archoil friction modifier. Oil is pretty slick. I use that in everything. Even my 5 hp air compressor. Even that thing is quieter.

Here's a tip for you cheap guys. Take the magnets out of old hard drives. They're very powerful

    2003- 3500 RWD Automatic.
S & B intake, BD Intercooler, Pusher Air Horn, MM3 Double R Tuning, Turbo Timer, electric Flex-a-lite fans, FASS 95,
50 HP tips, upgrade to 351 turbo, 3.42 gears, Twin air compressors, air bags, Remote dual oil filters, Hellwig sway bar, Front Winch. Home made Fuel Heater, BD Exhaust brake with Torque Lock. Tons of TLC

Re: Oil change time frame and mileage

I know many people with the magnets and it's a very good idea. Anyting to stop metals from moving through the system is good. But I never did since I always thought the filter stops them if and when the metal gets to the filter. And with the by pass filter, it's twice as likely to be stopped by a filter .. No ?

On my old truck, the oil came out black when I did the first oil change and everyone since. I've flushed the system by doing an oil change three times in 1,000 miles hoping to clean it out .. nothing chnaged but the weight of my wallet. But all my oil samples are good, and when they are close to the edge .. I change it. I did extend the life some more when I started using the Donaldson DBL 7349 oil filter. Most filters are 25 to 40 micron and the DBL 7349 is a 15 micron ... (and I will say I'm afraid to go smaller than that). So my filter will filter smaller particles. With the Amsoil 2 micron, it seems to eliminate more particles from the sample and this extends the life. Of course I should mention I run for the long haul oil changes. And with what I'm doing, I've hit over 80k between oil changes before. Gonna see what it will do on this one.

Most time the older truck and the newer ones that don't have all the smog trash running seems to stay clear longer. But for the '05 and '06s I've known, black is normal no matter what you do. And if the oil is honey clear or black doesn't bother me, it's if it's healthy oil or not is what I look for.. I do very much agree in changing the filter every 5k. But with that cost and an oil change per year, it's ended up cheap in the long run and my oil is still healthy. More money for more accessories ......

Agreed. As you know, I just use 2 standard Fleetguards remote mounted. I like it better than the Amsoil bypass system I had. Allot less expensive to maintain too. I'm only driving 15K a year anyway. But I do pay close attention to the oil condition without over kill. I just order a box of filters from Geno's every few years. They don't work on the Amsoil system, or they didn't.

Re: Oil change time frame and mileage

Per Geno's, my stock filter is the Fleetguard LF3972. The Donaldson DBL7349 filter I use is the same thread size. When I first used my bypass filter unit I used my stock filter on the unit. Then I replaced it with the Amsoil EaPB100. Same thread size. and EaBP100 rated to be good for a bypass filter for 70k. But they are big and I changed to the EaBP90 which are rated for 60k. Not much difference in mileage but close. And in a pinch, I can use a stock filter.

Not sure of you filters stock number, but if the threads are the same, you have a choice either way. And having choices is a good thing.

I just have an issue of going to small of a micron rating for the main oil filter since when it fills, you're on the systems bypass and filtering nothing. So 15 micron for the main is good and I will not drop lower that.

I too am using the Donaldson DBL7349 filter, but I read somewhere there is a filter made by Fleetguard that is a single filter body with a built in bypass filter and a regular filter all in one. I forgot to bookmark the page..Duh! Have any of you guys heard of this?

Re: Oil change time frame and mileage

I found the website that explains the 2 stage filter. Here is the youtube link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=efAsM8kRuYo) Apparently the filter that will fit the 5.9/6.7 Cummins is a Fleetguard LF9028, but I'd like to confirm that with someone who knows for sure. Any additional information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Same here, I might push to 3500 miles once in while, I daily drive it, and I warm it up in the morning at high idle per smarty maybe more than I should, but I wont drive a vehicle hard till they are warm. I figure having clean oil is good insurance.
