Question on 3rd gear 68RFE Warp tune

    Aloha all!

Quick question for all those with a 68RFE running WARP tunes.

I contacted Ray and he says it's normal. My 3rd gear on light to moderate acceleration goes from slipping until 1600-1700 rpm then locks. When it locks it drops to 1500 to 1600 rpm, revs up another 200 rpm on lock then bangs into 4th with a jump.

1st slips and engages nicely to second. 4th releases before going into 5th smoothly. 5th releases before going into 6th smoothly. Its the 3rd that is weird.

I did try tow haul and it locks 3rd after slight slipping and holds throughout to just before the 4th shift which felt awesome. But I can't be driving in tow haul all the time revving to 2100 rpm cruising LOL.

Anyone else have the same shifting patterns?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Question on 3rd gear 68RFE Warp tune

I'm sure others will chime in who are more knowledgeable but here goes. I'm warp tuned by Ray also. Bottom line is yes it's normal unfortunately. It's the convertor unlocking and locking back up and drove me nuts as well. There was a time when Raceme had more control over the trans parameters and the shifting was absolutely superb. Then Dodge released updates and changed all the parameters for the trans tuning. (Raceme and I'd assume others use the newest updates as the foundations for their base tunes that way we get important updates) As of now they don't have the new stuff figured out so we are stuck with what I'd consider mediocre trans tuning. Hopefully and reportedly they are working on re-mapping the trans parameters. It bothered me so much that I took the money I planned on doing headstuds with and got an ultra low stall convertor and flexplate from Revmax. It still doesn't shift as well as when the older tuning was in place but there is really no felt shift flare any more. It locks and unlocks so quickly now that you don't usually feel it. Previously Ray was able to adjust shift firmness and hold each gear to a more appropriate speed but not any more. I find my truck in 5th gear now at 30 or so mon where before I had Ray shifting into to 5th at around 50mph and 6th at 60mph. Still waiting and hoping they get that control back. Hope this helps you out some.

Thanks Noneck! I was feeling all alone here in the islands. Very few running Ray tunes to compare. My kids get a kick out of it at half throttle. It feels like it's falling flat just before it locks 3rd and then when it locks, all hell breaks loose all the way to 70 or 80. LOL!

I can live with it for sure. Ray is awesome and helped me a lot being that I'm thousands of miles away from him.

Yup, I know exactly what you mean. It bothered me to no end! And you simply won't find a better guy to do business with than Ray!

In standard trans mode, I have 3rd lock only to about mid way thru 3rd...so it locks for just a bit, unlocks for the shift, shifts and locks back up. In tow haul mode it locks a little bit sooner in 3rd, thus the difference.

Since this has been brought up...

I have talked with the software engineers and they said shifts with the TCC locked on a stock transmission is a bad idea and thus why Chrysler made a change in the base files Noneck speaks of.

To sum it up, stock transmissions need a little cushion between gear changes to protect the internal parts. The best way to rid the shift flare and keep just enough cushion to protect the internals is to change the toque converter to one with a lower stall speed than stock.

There are other tuners out there who can tune out the shift flare by keeping the TCC locked between shifts. They are not using Warp and are using their own binary edited tuning. If you will read the forums and social media, you will find that alot of folks are questioning how rough their transmisions shift with such tuning as well.

Here is something to think on. If you had a manual transmission with a good clutch and you power shifted the thing ever time you changed gears by popping the clutch under power... how long do you think the trans would last?

Thanks Ray @Double R Diesel. You have been a great help with both your videos and explanations. A man who knows his stuff! People from Hawaii are just finding out about your MM3 tunes and the shop that did my install was very impressed.
