There are some simple things you can do to improve the truck with the emissions in place. The cleaner you can get them to run, the better it will be.

Things like improving air flow on the intake. Shibby Engineering makes a high flow air horn with the EGR, and you can delete the grid heater. Big restrictions there. I'm not so sure a cold air filter is an answer anymore, but it is less restrictive than the factory. The factory air filter assembly can be modified to improve the air flow too.

Fuel filtering and delivery can be improved.

An MM3 Tuner can do some good things for you too. The above improvements will help it do more.

Your biggest issue is the EGR and the restricted exhaust. But to maintain the emissions, you need that stuff. However, the MM3 will let you shut down the EGR, and you can easily reinstate it at inspection time.

How often do you have to get sniffed by the state?

Now you know why I got rid of my 08.

What's the problem with it being over 50k and why won't it work?? I only ask b/c I'm in the same boat... I want to delete and tune but I live in Ca I have a 13 with 49700 miles.

So by trying to make something better u actually make it worse? So what's the other fix delete pipe and tune but don't they visually look at the DPF? If these are dumb questions, my apologies LOL

I believe you could get yourself a race pipe and put the old parts on and return to stock tune when you get inspected.
