    48re issue

    I have a 2004 3500 dually 2wd. It was having some issues downshifting into first unless I was at a complete stop for a few seconds then as I was driving home last night as I turned in my drive way it felt as if the converter was locked up I had to slam the beakes in order to stop and it stalled out several times before finally unlocking. after it unlocked it had very low torque in forward gears. I replaced the governor solenoid and the pressure sensor the filter and fluid. there were no chunks of metal in the pan fluid was a little brownish red. normal metal filings on the magnet. still very low torque in forward gear, reverse is fine. I put it on jack stands and it would go thru all the gears in drive but it is so weak I can hold the rear tire and keep it from moving. my buddy is thinking the torque converter but wouldn't that still be an issue in reverse? any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    I'm not a trans specialist, but many are and should chime in soon.
    When you dropped the pan, did you adjust the bands ?

    @Polaraco

    If you didn't really have a lot of clutch material and metal in the pan, how about a band adjustment?

    You might have a couple of issues going on there. I'm getting rusty in my old age, but Alex could be on something. there

    In the how too section I wrote up a article about adjusting the bands. The most important one is front band which is an external adjustment. While doing the process, see how many turns in the adjuster takes.

    The TCM could be suspect for the converter locking issue. It's behind and below the right battery. Check the ground on the fender bolt and be sure there;s no corrosion on the connectors. I'll look at the trouble shooting and see what II can find later today

    You're not going to like this, but I had this in the back of my head when I replied earlier. I could only evaluate it with the info I had. Below is a chart of what is engaged, when. Based on what you are saying, it is very possible your intermediate drum (Rear drum) is damaged. When you looked at the mud in the pan, did you happen to see any metal?

    There are other possibilities, low pressure, valve body. If you look at the chart, it shows the rear drum is engaged in all forward gears, which you say are weak. It is not engaged in reverse. What you are experiencing may not be the converter, but the drum messing up. With all the 48's I've rebuilt, I never saw this. But it is typical for the drum to be trashed one way or another. Your entire forward motion depends on it.
