Thread: 2015 2nd Gen Swap GTX4294R

    2015 2nd Gen Swap GTX4294R

    I figured I’d finally start a thread.

Coming from a stock truck with PPEI tuning from 2015.

I ordered some parts at the end of Nov, but it took a while.

I had to order the kit from WCfab and then purchase the turbo (from Himni racing) to be sent to them to confirm fitment.

I have some of the parts in but not all.

I’m not 100% sure how the water cooling lines for the turbo will go.

I believe the stock water lines go from the pipe that gets removed with the 2nd gen kit.

I did buy a fleece coolant bypass kit and some Mishimoto radiator hoses to swap out since the coolant will be drained.

Does anyone here ever does a 2nd gen swap and use a water-cooled turbo? Any idea what’s the best option for feed/drain?

Here are some pics just test fitting the S400 connections. They seem to mate up nicely.

There’s also a speed sensor port I’ll have to plug, but I haven’t sourced the plug yet.

I called a turbo shop, and the guy said he thought it was a 1/8npt, but further investigation shows otherwise. I called atp turbo and it turns out it’s 3/8npt. I must have heard them wrong. But I should be able to plug that hole no problem.

I'm still waiting on a steed speed manifold, shipped on Dec 5th, and still in route, LOL.

30 days later, but at least it’s in Charlotte now.

It shouldn’t be too much longer to arrive.

I've also already purchased an MM3 and tunes.

I can’t install it yet as they’re set up for the 2nd gen swap.

You’re not far from me if you’re in Charlotte.

I don’t have first hand knowledge but I’d think you could just run some longer braided hoses (like OEM) to reach the new turbo position.

Keep them hooked to same ports as current stock turbo for ensured flow.

Just saw a different thread where someone burnt up their Garrett having two pressurized lines feeding it somehow.

I’m in Lowell, the manifold is in the USPS hands in Charlotte.

I was thinking that would work, but I am pretty sure the water line has to be deleted with 2nd gen manifold as it would be in the way.

Specifically, the crossover pipe that comes up from where I think the thermostat is.

I did find a thread from cumminsforums that was talking about having the lines hooked up wrong.

That’s what makes me want to do it right.

I did find it again today, looks like he did provide some guidance.

The EGR cooler riser has to go yes- I thought the turbo feed was off a different spot though.

Got the final piece in today.

The steed speed. :-) now I just have to set up a time I get it all installed.

This is the worst time of year with it being cold and rainy and I do t have a space indoors to do it.

    Re: 2015 2nd Gen Swap GTX4294R

Little update. I spent most of Saturday working on the swap. Got all the old stuff out. Damn stock VGT was tough as hell to remove. Heavy and the electronic controller is held by 2 8mm bolts that have to be held on both sides to get loose.

anyway got it all apart and started in on the Fleece coolant bypass. And I’m stuck. After like an hour trying to get the rear freeze plug out I got called into work. Unfortunately I’m on call all weekend. Now today I got back to work and got the plug to budge. But not enough to get out. After another 1.5-2hr of working on it, I got called back to work again. So I’ll have to wait for another day off to resume hammering it out. Sucks, because after it’s out I bet I can get the other stuff all mounted up in a couple hours tops. I’m so frustrated, maybe it would have quicker to pull the trans. Or maybe I’ll try and self tapping screw to pull it out. I don’t know. Here’s two pics, one of it after the first day. And one after today. Seems to be turning as I focus on the top lip. I haven’t remove freeze plugs too much, but I don’t think I’ve ever done it with this little accessibility. Watching some YouTube videos, it seems like some people are able to get it out in like 10min. I even removed the down pipe and exhaust behind it to get better access. Also had to remove the drivers fender liner to get the brace out of the way.

    Here are some updates.

I got the freeze plug out today and started the install.

    Here are some pics.

I’m down to the turbo lines and exhaust.

Followed by exhaust and filling and I’ll be done.

Unfortunately, the sun went down and it began to rain and it’s in the 30s.

So I’ll have to try again another day. Supposed to rain all day tomorrow.

Got her buttoned up enough to go for a ride.

I’m not done with the coolant bypass hose hold downs.

Couldn’t get to it easily with the turbo in there.

Just did a quick 10min cruise around with only light throttle (trans has to relearn after flash).

I’m really surprised there’s like 5-10psi at light throttle and highway speeds.

I figured it wouldn’t have any until it spooled a bit more.

I haven’t given it enough to see how much boost it’s going to run.

I really don’t want to have to buy a built trans yet.
