I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Hello all, brand new to "Diesels" .. at least this version .. I have a CDL A been driving for years .. but never personally owned my own pick up ... I think it's about time .. i'm a die hard Dodge/Cummins fan ... so i'm most certain this is the direction i'm gonna go .. but with there being so many generations .. what generation is the best to go for .. i'd like a newer year models, it'll be a family truck so must have quad cab and can tell you for a fact I will be getting rid of that DEF or whatever it is .. prolly a chip intake and exhaust ... that'll prolly be about it .. mostly just a nice truck .. I may get into more mods if you guys talk me into something that is worth having .. can anyone help or at least point me towards the post that's already been started that will help me??:confused::confused:

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Welcome to the forum @Richard Tyler! I'm new to owning one myself, been driving dump truck for too many years to count. Personally, I wanted a 4th generation. I had a second generation gas V10 and loved the pickup, but engine parts were getting difficult to find. The 6.7 engine, larger cab, overall appearance and comforts of the 4th gen sold me.

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
thank you for the response @walla2k5 ... idk if i tagged you the right way ... I do like the 4th gen .. i'm just worried about getting into the generation that has issues .. when I almost got one before i learned all about the 5.9 24v and was happy with it .. but those are old now .. any issues with you 6.7?

The only issue with the 3rd and 4th gen Cummins is the BS pollution control crapola delete that crap put in MM3 tuner from Ray at DRD best in the buisness you can run his EGRless tuning or do full delete

You got the tag right :D I'm sure you've read about the recalls Dodge has had lately, but you get those with any make.

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Thanks @HKBIGDADDYDIESELDAN .. so 3rd or 4th gen are both good just get rid off the emmusion control ... I'm sure it's cheaper to just run the chip .. but is full delete best? I hear if you get rid of that junk you mph gains significantly
-
Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
@walla2k5 no .. i haven't been keeping track .. what recalls? .. and it's sounding like 3rd or 4th gen .. bout the same both good buys?

Full delete is definitely the way to go bud but if you buy a new truck a lot of guys are worried about there warranty being null and void if you delete that’s why Ray from DRD and MM3 came out with the EGRless tuning you don’t have to remove anything you just end up turning it off but from what I understand that if you buy one with significant mileage on it your only going to be able to go to 50,000 miles is cut off point for the most part :tard::rockon:
-
Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
What do you mean @HKBIGDADDYDIESELDAN .. it will not be super new .. I'm looking for one 85k <190k miles .. but I guess I'll take what i can find

If your looking at that kind of mileage then full delete 4” or 5” FloPro TBE Exhaust and MM3 custom tunes from Ray at DRD it is and he is the best in the buisness and you’ll have to do a tuner there is no such thing as a chip on a Cummins bud

Latest is a water pump recall for certain years and models. 3rd - 4th both are great. It's a Cummins!
-
Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Well that's what i meant @HKBIGDADDYDIESELDAN... gexz ???? is that sorta millage alright to be looking at .. these things run forever right
-
Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Do you live in an area where you need vehicle inspections? Could ultimately impact your decision about deleting emission components. Folks run these rigs until the wheels fall off, with or without deletes.

I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Hello and welcome @Richard Tyler [emoji4]
Enjoy our forum !
I’ve had both the 3rd gen 5.9 (2006) and loved it, no emission crap ( I had it straight piped with a Smarty Jr tuner and all was happy [emoji4]) and I’ve owned 2 4th gen 6.7’s. If your looking for a newer truck you have options, from 2010-2012 6.7s still have emissions but NO DEF, you can delete the DPF/tune your truck and be good to go, from 2013 and up is DEF nightmare (my opinion). Like all said above, it comes down to YOUR personal preference... what it is you want down the road... most Cummins owners want longevity/reliability. with proper care and pm’s these engines can go for a very long time. I know of the 5.9’s could go an easy 500,000 miles with proper care and maintenance, I haven’t heard of any 6.7’s yet that hit that mark but I’m sure some are close ! I’m sure others will chime in and give their opinions [emoji6] GOOD LUCK on your decision and hope to see you soon with your Cummins [emoji106]

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
@walla2k5 /// that's what I figured .. that's how long i'll have her I just want the least amount of problems .. i.e. expensive bone rattling shop costs .. I'd hope most anything needing done I could do most myself ... or have someone in the yard that could help me out ... and yes .. i'm in Forney Texas ... we have emmisions on inspection .. but theres ways around that @cumminsbadgirl .. something around 2006 sound like my speed .. that and I know a bit about the 5.9 ... i highly doubt i'll be getting anything newer than a 2013 unless otherwise convinced .. I know there pricey .. I guess I want the least pricey and most efficient and reliable generation? If that even makes sense :/ ... is the newer 6.7 in a 2010/2012 the way to go? or scale it back to a 5.9?

If your gonna want to run a tuner you’ll have to go with the 4th gens to use the MM3 tuner from Ray of DRD as in he only tunes the 4th gens if your in the 3rd gens you can only use the Smarty tuners which are good for that gens Simple fact your looking at a Cummins the best and only Real Diesel they put in a pickup truck yes they pretty much last forever if you take care of them the 5.9 have gone to 1 million miles the 6.7 are just a little bigger bore and stroke but the same motor as the 5.9 if you get rid of all the pollution control BS they will run just as long :cool:

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
@Richard Tyler
I love my 6.7 but if I had the $$ to have a 2nd Truck I would go with a 5.9 and it would be specifically a 2006, nothing else. They said the 2006 was the last of the good year due to the 6.7’s coming out in 2007 then when I had the 2012 they said that was the last of the good year due to DEF coming out in 2013, I have a 2014 and will never get rid of her.

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
:welcome: to the forum @Richard Tyler
I'm a big beliver in the later 3rd gen, but that's because I own one. Plenty of parts, the later 5.9's are proven, no DEF and it has never let me down and easy to maintain. Yes, the newer modles have more torque and HP, but with a few bucks, so can the 5.9's. It's a hard choice being a 1st time buyer.

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Ahh! I was almost dead set on something like a 2012 Cummins .. but now @AnOldBiker you have me second guessing .. I would enjoy "cheaper" maintenance.. I'm so lost .. help guys!! And girl
-
I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Just “shop” around in your area, test drive both the 5.9 and the 6.7 only you will know what you want and like. This forum is definitely the best out there and no one will judge you for what you choose and if you have any questions or doubts members on here will help you out [emoji6] GOOD LUCK and hope to see you soon [emoji106]

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Nothing will be exactly what I want till I play with it .. and the ones that are exactly what I want I dont want to buy cause they may have been ragged out by some kid

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
Is there any year models to stay away from or a mileage I should stay under?
-
Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
I have a '12 and love this truck!! Been deleted since 5k miles and since it's deleted the only extra maintenance cost over my buddy's 5.9 is the price difference in the filters.
A big plus for us is with the 4th gen trucks ('10+) you get a full crew cab instead of a club cab like the older 5.9 trucks but still get a full size bed.
Like stated above, drive a few different years before deciding. All in all, get a clean one, that was well maintained and the year doesn't really matter.

Re: I'm sure i'm not the first ..
thanks everyone for you input .. and thank you @Power247 .. what you just said really helped me make up my mind .. i'm sorry if i'm frustrating .. i'm just starving for information that i haven't gotten from hundreds of videos and reviews etc. i've read ... I crave peoples personal experiences ... i'll drive both (5.9 and 6.7).. but this will also be a family vehicle need to be able to get a car seat in the back for my boy .. so big crew cab is a must .. not a fan of MEGA cabs .. i'm defiantly leaning towards 4th gen (2010+) .. Since i'll be dropping quite a chunk of coins .. I want her to be perfect ... i'll have her forever .. right? :D ... idk quite the difference between smarty for 5.9 and MM3 for 6.7 .. but i like the way the MM3 changes the truck (from what i've seen)... youtube :/ ... she will def. be nice .. i hope ..
