Oil smell post cold start
Not sure if I am paranoid or not but I just started my truck to go home after work in the middle of a -30 below cold snap. It started OK, a little grumpy, but fired up.
At first, it showed an icon where the coil is on the dash that looked like a turbo with arrows below it for about 15 seconds then disappeared. I let it warm up to about 100 degrees - Best it will ever do at -30 then drove slowly about 2 miles to the hwy.
On the way, while driving, I could smell what I thought was a slight hint of fresh engine oil through what I assume is the vent. I stopped at the store on the way home (about 30km from work) to get something. When I came out, I could smell fresh oil again while standing outside my truck. Is this something to be concerned about?
It ran fine, heated up as normal, had lots of power and was showing 232 KPA of oil pressure at idle and about 350ish while driving.
Thanks!!!!!

What weight oil ya running ?
Oil level ok ?
There shouldn't have an odor unless there's a leak, .
Any sign of a leak in the engine compartment ?

5:30 weight
Oil level seemed OK but I wanted to check it again after the engine cools
No signs of a leak in the engine but it was VERY dark and hard to see. Nothing underneath
Plus, from what I can tell, the oil pressure is good

Check around the oil filter. Sometimes the high oil pressure pushes out the oil filter adapter gasket or if the filter isn't tight enough, past that gasket. It's right under the exhaust manifold. . . .

Thanks, I’ll do that as soon as I am off work and at my garage. In the meantime, what KPA or PSI should I have? I’m about 370 KPA while driving and about 220 KPA at idle

That's about right hot. What is it when it's cold? That's when it's a problem.
If you punch it when it's cold, the cold oil is thicker and will pump up twice that. That's when the gaskets get damaged

I’ll have to check tomorrow but I think it’s about 220kpa

Look on top by the valve cover. Just thought the cover may be leaking
I think leaking oil coolers aren't uncommon either

OK, sorry, it’s been really busy!!!
Cold start.....by the time I got out to it, about 5 min, the engine was at was 52 degrees F and my EVIC gauge read 51 psi or about 352KPA of oil pressure.
She was smoking up the entire lot though as it’s -30 today!!!

Anyone.....would that be normal oil pressure for a cold engine?

I can’t speak for sure in those air temps, but mine will be 47-48 on cold start at 30-40 degrees with 15/40 oil.

food for thought.
I have noticed on a few 6.7's when it is cold and it takes forever to warm the truck, you will get smells from the exhaust or if someone is deleted with a modified CCV system.
now if you are a person that is newer to owning a Cummins, this exhaust smell could be what you are smelling. I would say plug in your truck at those temps, drive truck moderate when its that cold until you are up to operating temp. check for leaks of course, (this should be a normal thing)
put your vent on circulation.

Thanks for everyone’s input I SUPER appreciate it!!! I’ve not smelled the “fresh oil” since that night so I am chalking it up to a weird unexplained occurrence. My oil level is good, from what I am told, the PSI is good at both cold and warm status and I can’t see any leaks.
As for the exhaust smell, there is a definite difference than the fresh oil smell I had the other day...at lest with my truck. When cold, it blows a thick almost “smoky” white exhaust that smells for lack of a better word “caustic” and can burn the eyes if exposed to it. It only gets like this though when the temperature really drops....high -20’s to low -40’s range. Outside of that, the truck is cold but there is no real “smoke” billowing out.
I usually do plug it in when the temp get to -25 or worse but sometimes the electrical posts where I work are not always on or they have tripped a breaker somewhere.
What does the vent on circulation do? I’ve never hear if that. Usually I crank the heat and put it in the windshield to assist with clearing the ice. I also turn off the radio to help the batteries a little...one less draw in my mind?

Re: Oil smell post cold start
The smoke is normal at first start for a deleted truck when the temps are that cold until it warms up.
The recirculating keeps outside fresh air from being pulled in.
Yes you will get a weird smell but that’s what diesels smell like that are deleted. That’s the way they use to smell back in the day before all this EPA crap was installed. It will also sometimes have an oil burning smell that your probably smelling.
I agree though just keep a lookout for an oil leak to make sure that’s not the culprit. Also check to make sure you don’t have any leaks in your exhaust that could be creeping up into your cab.
