2nd/3rd Gen Exhaust Manifold Comparison
Just wanted to know your thoughts on comparing 2nd gen manifolds vs 3 gens. Was it an upgrade downgrade or lateral move when dodge moved the turbo from the center to the rear??? Also if having the turbo in the center is better is their any gains for the 3rd gen and are their any major modifications involved with the swap.

1st off ... :welcome: to the forum @sumptonjackson
I really don't see the advantage of it being in the center or on the upper portion of the engine compartment, unless it was for the layout of the 3rd gen engine parts and accessories for the engineers. Being on the upper porting of the compartment, it is an advantage of intake accessories and designs versus the 3rd gen. But not much more.

So when everyone states that their EGTs go way down when they do a second gen manifold swap, is that just from the differences in the turbo setup instead of the manifold?

It's both really. It improves airflow quite a bit and most people see egt differences between 250-400 degrees cooler depending on turbo set up and tuning ya know?
The second gen swap gets you a mass improvement on airflow.
Reduces drive pressure.
Gets you a decent variety of turbo to choose from so you can make more power.
Is alot of work but well worth it in my opinion!

This is what was said on a YouTube video which is the main reason I posted this question in the first place. Seems like an inexpensive way to gain airflow besides the very large k&n filter I have now

Yes sir most definitely! You won't regret it later on down the line either.

I have just found out that my truck has this Mod. No big deal right... well actually now i can't pass the smog visual... does anyone know if there are CA CARB legal aftermarket intakes that will fit a 3rd gen with this Mod. The AFE i ordered for a 03-07 wont fit, now i know why.

What are the specs for visual carb in your state?

There is no 2G swap carb legal intake.
California smog is stupid.
You will find some places don't care, and others pop your hood and fail you.
As for the reason for dodge switching manifolds was "room" for the emissions crap.
The 3rd Gen manifold is trash, and the second-gen has equal flow, whereas the 3rd gen forces cylinders 5/6 to push air harder with my backpressure reason why 2G swap sees huge numbers gain in lowering EGTs.
I want to swap to a 2G because I need to rebuild my shocks and get my axle moved forward.
I am slowly getting there.

From my swap, I noticed a considerable drop in EGTs.
I liked the EB, but electronics always fail, so I swapped her.
The kit i bought had the 3-piece BD manifold.
The big difference from the VGT manifold to a 2G is the location of the flange.
What the 2G does is it centers the flange in the middle, thus giving you better flow rates and the biggest.
I would say 300 to 400 like stated above on the EGT drop.
You will love the swap without a doubt.
Down the road, if you do or will pull, you can buy an inline brake, which is the same as the VGT setup.
