Upgrade Install Question
I have an Exhaust, Tuner, and EGR upgrade kit.
I have a school auto tech class that the teacher asked me to allow his students to install the exhaust.
I am fine with them installing it but am curious to know if I would be okay driving my truck back to my house that afternoon to complete the EGR upgrade and tuner install?
I live about 15 mins (city street) with traffic from where the class is to where my house is.

You want to install the tuner first then hard parts.

That’s what I figured.
Would I be safe driving home with the EGR still factory?

They turn that off.
All you need to do is the exhaust.

Re: Upgrade Install Question
Really appreciate it. The shop teacher wants me to drop it off with him that morning.
I will just make sure the tuner is wired up first.
Thanks.

You want to install the tuner first before disconnecting the exhaust wiring and components.

Re: Upgrade Install Question
Do the install for the tune and then use the drive to school to do the relearn on the trans. You can then enjoy the drive home from work.

Re: Upgrade Install Question
Got the tuner installed this morning and exhaust installed by the high school seniors in the Autotech class.
Overall very happy with the results. My truck is alive again and oh the smell of diesel exhaust in the air!
One gripe, I have a high pitched ‘whine’ at idle.
My 2010 didn’t have this when it was deleted the same way.
As soon as I tap the gas it goes away. I’m assuming turbo?
Is there anyone else that has this?

Perfectly normal with VGT. If you don’t want to hear it turn off your exhaust brake. [emoji1303]

Re: Upgrade Install Question
It could be. Also depends on the outside temp. If you have your exhaust brake on. Recommended all the time.
With the tuning and that big factory emissions gunk off..
More noise is heard. See if it does it on a warmed up truck compared to cold or colder temps.

Re: Upgrade Install Question
Exhaust brake isn’t on and I’m not talking about the normal low pitch whine. This is a very loud high pitch whine. I guess I will have to put a video up to show. It’s not the normal turbo sound I’m use to. It’s more like a loud constant high pitch whistle.

This sound is when it was warm. I will try and get a video up tomorrow. I am off so I should be able to get one up mid morning.

If it sounds like blowing through two blades of grass, could be an exhaust manifold gasket leak. Check the exhaust stud spacers for rotation. I had this sound and both #1 cylinder exhaust manifold studs were broken. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8cf064182e.jpg

Re: Upgrade Install Question
Was this a delete pipe or full turbo back exhaust
Don't think its tuning. May have a leak. Don't be alarmed. U said it goes away when you add pedal. It may be that the exhaust pressure increases and changing the leak sound if that's the case.
Also does it sound the same with the EB on or off.
Try and pin point sound. If it's from under. Check connections on exhaust. More under engine check down pipe. Could use a hose as sort of a hearing aid.
Or crank up the volume if its heard inside can. Ha kidding

I haven’t done anything under the hood yet.
Full turbo back 4” installed. Down pipe was taken off through pass fender and everything else done from under the truck.

Okay could be a leak between the turbo and down pipe. Was the gasket replaced?

Will do. I will get a video up in the morning.
The fender well was taken off by me and I was out with the class during install. I even got under the truck and tied up sensors while they were on breaks. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary and no other items under the hood were messed with.
On a side note, located a small oil leak when I installed the MM3. Not even 9k miles on truck. I will post up some stuff in the morning.

You can really hear the whistle about 11-13 seconds. It’s coming from the tail pipe not under the hood

Sounds perfectly normal for a straight pipe. Mine sounds exactly the same.

My 2010 sounded like the beginning of the video with a little whistle out of the pipe but this is a super loud whistle. Just trying to figure it out.
Would a muffler reduce the whistle?

Oh I’m sure a muffler would definitely help. When you had your soot cookers on you didn’t hear it whistle like that did you?

Agreed.
Just comparing my 2010 to this truck. I had a 4” TBE without muffler on both and they sound completely different.

I'm at work so I just saw the Video. I say this is completely normal. I do believe that the VGT in your past truck was different than the current VGT and parameters stock to stock trucks. my 17 with the emission stuff on to me is louder whistle out the tail pipe than a friends 11 stock.
just wait until its cold and goes to high idle with the EB on.

Thanks for the info. Mine is definitely louder than my stock 2010.
It was in the twenties this morning. I love it when the high idle kicks in. I can smell me exhaust again!

Re: Upgrade Install Question
this Friday I'm just doing the delete pipe but I do plan on changing the direction of the tail pipe. I will cut it and have it pointed down just as it goes over the back axle. this way the loud thing isn't blasting straight at my house in the mornings, as well as pointing to cars next to me.
the only issue with this would be if you did lots of livestock/animal transports and you had lots of black smoke coming out. I just deal with my Girlfriends short bus goats so i wont be concerned about it.

You ever had an axle dump before? I tried it once, lots of drone and it was so loud in the cab.

Re: Upgrade Install Question
I have had hood stack, rear single stack, have had it dumped right under the passenger seat, dumped in front of back wheel on all my different past trucks. most of those were stoopid loud . I can say my EGT cool down time was like 20 sec tho. ha.
so I wont dump it right after it crest the axle. it will be closer to spare tire area. I have used AEROTURBINE mufflers in last 3 trucks. those really removed any sharp harmonics and freeway drone. I don't know what the delete pipe will sound like on this long bed truck but if it has a drone I will put up something. one of my past trucks during summer and drags there was just a straight pipe, winter time when the truck got dumbed down and used some in town, I had a very long Donaldson Muffler it was 51" long and and maybe 9-10" diameter for a 5" pipe,
was a straight thru design with minimal perf and no packing. that was a beast and better than the expensive diamond eye etc that were getting popular. A person can get a nelson or Donaldson from tractor , big rig and farm stores for pretty cheap. I know it was like 2008 or 2009 but i bought it for 50ish $.

Upgrade Install Question
Short update.
Got under the truck this morning trying to track down the whistle.
Seemed like it was coming from the tail pipe section.
Got under the passenger side just in front of the passenger side rear wheel and the sound was stronger.
I hit the pipe with my palm and the sound went away.
I am assuming something is loose. Gonna have to loosen everything and try and squeeze them together more and then reclamp and see if it fixes.
I think it may be due to a loose connection.
I will update more when I know.
