Thoughts on buying this truck...
Well looks like insurance co. is totaling my 08 2500.
Going to look at this one tomorrow. Any thoughts?
Talking to him on the phone, interior is perfect and zero rust under the fender flares. My biggest concern is the stock 68RFE with a smarty and 37s.
Also will the 68RFE be OK on 37s after I put my Revmax valve body and DRD MM3 on it or are they still too much?
He never personally changed gear ratios but he has no idea what the PO did.
He's kinda clueless actually...bought it because it was pretty and its been living in his garage for a few years.

Re: Thoughts on buying this truck...
37s on 3.42s is a horrible combination. Throwing a hot tune at that combo is a recipe for a wrecked transmission.
Truck has 180k on what's likely a stock transmission, 37s without gearing is bad news bears, CL ad says the truck is deleted & tuned but you're saying it's not tuned at all.
0/10 would not buy.

Just a Smarty Jr...No Trans tuning. Was 2008 3500 3.42 or 3.73?

No trans tuning is reason enough to move on. I have no idea what the gear ratio will be, looks like 3.73 or 4.10 were the options for that year according to Google. But I can't speak to the accuracy of that information.

Re: Thoughts on buying this truck...
I’d pass- stock trans with 37s is no good.
if your not afraid of high mileage and like 3rd gen body style look for a 5.9 vs 6.7
if you like 6.7 then I’d look for a stock 4th gen. Interiors are way more roomy and quite from wind noise etc 3rd gens were known for
-
Re: Thoughts on buying this truck...
This one's kinda growing on me...100k more miles, but it's a stick, so that doesn't scare me as much...I can throw a DD clutch at a G56 and be good for a loooong time a lot cheaper than building a 68RFE. Plus its a long bed...price just seems kinda high for the miles https://www.route22autos.net/details...-2500/56118470

Not sure when dodge stopped putting a decal in the glove box, this showed the gear ratio on this decal. could check that.

$10k-12k truck to me depending on condition. That kinda mileage get ready to do fuel pump and injectors. Check the Front end good. Usually about 180-200k is when ball joints and steering components wear for pavement/light duty rigs

Anyway to tell gearing by VIN?

Should be able to call local dealership and give them the last 8 so they can tell you. If they can’t call another dealer. There has to be a way in case you needed parts for rear end!

I would hope so...tag was missing from rear end...so, short of jacking it up in his driveway and and counting driveshaft revolutions while turning wheel, dealer is only way

This will only tell you what was in it from the factory.

How reliable were the 48REs? Except for my Duramax, all my trucks have been manuals.

48re is fine for stock power like the 68 it needs some attention for anything over stock. That is a 4 speed vs 6 in the 68 so 68 is better if you do a lot of highway or 55mph and faster.
You Just can’t beat the 5.9 with no emissions to deal with/delete and the fuel mileage is way better stock or tuned vs. 6.7

I drive a few hundred miles a day at 75 mph...plus I already have all 6.7 delete parts, and revmax valve body for 68RFE that I'm pulling off my other truck before insurance takes it...and the new in box revmax ultra low stall triple disc TC that got delivered the day after the wreck...kinda already set up for 6.7

Maybe ask em if they’d take a $500 deposit to hold it while you work out travel- if you no show they keep the $500 if you show and it’s not what you thought it gets refunded but you’re out airfare

What are the chances its just lemon trans that will never be right? Not really looking to deal with that every 25k miles

The auto trans get a bad wrap but let’s face it even an Allison will fail depending on how much power is added.
If the trans fails it is likely because it had the power turned up on it and no mods to support it. If it was rebuilt and left the way it was in the first place with still more power added then it will fail again.
I wouldn’t let that scare you too much. You have a valvebody, TQ, and most importantly tuning to go along with these items to help support more power.
if push comes to shove then a more “built” transmission would be in order.
Like anything if you push something past what the intended use is then you’re on borrowed time.
Long winded way to say no one would own an auto if replacing the trans every 25k was the way it is.
realistically do a filter and fluid swap every 75-100k depending on hot rodding or towing heavy

That's kinda what I was thinking...One of the pics shows a tuner box and both trans jobs were done at Aamco...possible running the tuner set on full retard and smoked it, had it rebuilt to stock, and did the same thing again....

Id bet money that’s what happened- they were on a budget and had it done there. Second rebuild could have been under warranty. I’d see if maybe it’s transferrable to new owner in case you have issues before adding your upgrades
